The Best UK Staycation Destinations

As the warm weather hits, Britain’s drivers take to the highways in pursuit of summer road trips. While some may be tempted to travel further afield and hop on a plane (now that the COVID-19 pandemic has lessened), for many of us the best place to be is at home on ‘staycation’.

If you’re planning to holiday in the UK this year and are looking for some inspiration, you’re in the right place. From thrill-seeker hotspots to laid-back road routes, we have put together a list of the best places to visit while on a staycation in the UK.

The Jurassic Coast, Dorset

Starting in the Southern-most part of the UK, we come to The Jurassic Coast. Also known as the ‘Pearl of Dorset’, The Jurassic Coast is a picturesque stretch of historic coastline that you just can’t miss. Classified as an official UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast consists of 95 miles of uninterrupted beach, beginning in Exmouth and ending in Swanage.

If you’re a fan of beach combing, this is the ideal location for a holiday. This area is world-famous for its shoreline and the fossils that are found there - hence its name.

Thanks to the number of activities along the shoreline, a trip to the Jurassic Coastline has something for all the family. From water sports to fossil hunting, and shopping to eating out, locations such as Lyme Regis and the Isle of Portland are not only idyllic but fun too.

The Isle Of Skye, Scotland

Next up, we’re heading as far North as possible to the Isle of Skye in Scotland. As we all know, Scotland is renowned for its drives (like the NC 500, for example), but the Isle of Sky really is something else when it comes to road trips.

Accessible via boat or bridge from the mainland, Skye is almost like a world of its own. At just 50 miles long, it is possible to drive around the entire island in half a day, making it the perfect summer road trip spot.

An excellent location for hiking and wildlife enthusiasts, the island has a series of walking trails like The Cullin Range and The Trotternish Ridge. If you decided to take to the seas for an afternoon, you could try your hand at whale watching, maybe seeing a dolphin or two.

The Lake District

Remaining ‘up North’, our next staycation destination is The Lake District — or, more specifically, a spot called Bassenthwaite. If you’re keen to avoid the summer holiday rush, we’d recommend having your road trip in September. Not only will you miss the crowds of families with children, but you’ll get to see all the fabulous fungi in bloom.

The Lake District is the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure as you can take it at your own pace. By visiting just a handful of lakes, you’ll get to experience some awesome things. For example, canoeing on Keswick, sailing on Ulverston, or even trying the infinity bridge at Honister Slate Mine if you’re a thrillseeker.

Of course, if the weather gets really hot, there is always the option to go wild swimming to cool down. The Lake District is famous for its 16 lakes after all.

Snowdonia, Wales

Time for some more spectacular scenery in Snowdonia. Travelling to Wales on a road trip will take you past some fantastic sights — so much so that the drive is almost half the fun. Like The Lake District, Snowdonia is jam packed full of things to do. From the mountains and hills to climb, to the historic landmarks to visit.

If you’re feeling adventurous, there is always the option to climb Snowdon — the 3,546-foot mountain that the area is named after. The proof is in the pudding when it comes to the popularity of the place — over 4 million visitors enjoy the delights of Snowdonia each year. Some of which include:
